What's in your lip balm?

Your lips need extra care all year long, but especially in the summer months that's why applying a moisturizer for your lips everyday is important for overall lip health. The main reason is because the skin on the your lips is different from the skin on your body. Your lips have no oil glands, which means that your lips cannot make its own oils to keep moisturized. Your lips also do not have melanin, which means there is no natural protection from the sun. As the temperatures rise, your lips are more exposed to harmful UV rays. Without protection from the sun and the inability to produce oil, your lips will become dehydrated and chapped.

Most of us who have experienced dry lips automatically think licking them to add moisture solves the problem. Ironically, licking your lips makes the problem worse because once saliva dries it takes away any natural moisturizer on your lips making them even drier.

I take lip butter pretty seriously, I must say I'm pretty picky. Not only does it have to have the right consistency ( I really hate super hard lip balm) even worse is lip balm I have to reapply 50 million times a day.

When I was in Corporate America, I wore lipstick or colored lip gloss everyday, but nowadays I usually reserve lipstick or colored lipgloss for occasions that are a step up from the grocery store. In the meantime though, I still need to keep my lips moisturized. After being disappointed in a few selections or loving a couple others but unwilling to pay for them because I was running out too fast, I decided to make my own. I tweaked and re-tweaking my recipe until finally I came up with the perfect blend of butters and oils to create our Chocolate Lip Butter. I turned my husband who could've had stock in Carmex into a faithful non paying customer.

What makes a good lip balm that feels good enough to be called a butter is rich quality ingredients. We only use ingredients that not only provide protection to your lips, but also make your lips happy. We use a rich blend of Cocoa and Shea Butters along with sweet almond and coconut oils with Vitamin E.

Sweet Almond oil is naturally rich in vitamin A, B and E, which are great for skin health. In fact, most skin care products are loaded with these vitamins. Sweet almond oil also helps in maintaining moisture levels. The minerals in Coconut oil cure dryness and make your lips soft.

Shea Butter which I call skin's BFF strengthens skin, helps repair damage and reduces inflammation. As a moisturizer, Shea Butter heals the skin and lips from irritation.
Cocoa Butter is high in antioxidants and protects your skin from free radicals that cause dark patches and dull skin and soothes dry cracked skin.

Avocado oil speeds cell regeneration and nourishes your skin with skin feeding nutrients potassium and Vitamin E while certified organic beeswax provides sunscreen.

So as we enjoy Spring and head into the hot Summer months especially in the South make sure your lips are moisturized and protected.
